Effective
communication is important and interesting for me because as an old instrument
of expression people’s minds, feelings and opinions it takes place in our everyday
life almost undetected. It has been developing for a long time and it differs
from one person to another one, from one culture to another one and together
brings a lot of aspects which people can use to share ideas.
I am
interested in communication from two different perspectives. One of them is
related to me personally. It includes my needs of communication skills. I would
like to improve my presentation skills and also the way how to communicate with
other people. As I used to be very shy during presenting anything or speaking
in front of bigger group of people, I was trying to learn more about nonverbal
communication and presentations. Also a part time job as a guide helped me a
lot because the best way of practising communication skills is not only to think
and read about them but also to put them into the reality. These matters are
quite difficult for me in my native language and in English it is even harder
so improving these skills in this language is a new challenge for me.
The second
perspective is not related to improving communication skills but to trying to
understand them through other people’s behaviour. For example I really like to
watch people talking, especially when I cannot hear them, it is surprising how
easy it can be to guess what they are talking about only by observing the nonverbal
communication.
In
conclusion I have to say that the skills I would like to learn are not useful
only in my future job but mainly in life and relationships and that is why I am
taking this course.
Thanks for this initial post, Katerina. You clearly and concisely spell out your interest in developing better comm skills.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that as support for your need you mention that even in Czech you have clear needs. Of course, that makes sense. There's probably no person on earth who can communicate perfectly.
By the way, what sort of guide were you? It would make your post just a tad more interesting to include a few lines of discussion on your guide experience, or even about your presentation experience, so that we readers can visualize what you mean.
In any case, this is a well developed short essay. I look forward to reading more from you. I'd also like to see you get more involved in giving your blog mates some feedback.
Thanks!
Thank you for your comment, Brad. Exactly, I think I need to improve my communication skills in Czech language also. That is why English is challenging me even more.
DeleteAbout the guiding, I had part-time job as a guide at fortress and in the church. It was usually for groups of 20-40 people and the job content was about showing guests the object and take care of them as some parts were slightly dangerous to go through. It was definitelly a great experience for me, not only in terms of developing communication skills, but also as in terms of making faster judgment about people and estimating better how to lead the guided tour.
Thank you for your feedback!
One area you can improve on is voice reaction paper modulation. This is useful to keep our audience captivated throughout.
